Let's Get Active!

Exercise with your kids!

With summer in full swing, and kids off of school it seems as if being a parent just got busier. With a busy schedule and kids waiting to be entertained, it can be difficult to fit regular exercise into your day to day routine. Now there are countless videos and classes out there that are always encouraging this idea of being active anywhere and everywhere. What they fail to recognize is the difficulty of factoring in child care into that. At Star Montessori, we believe children weren’t meant to be cooped up in a room all day, that’s why we have 2 scheduled playground times a day. Kids learn a lot by being outdoors, running, socializing with friends, jumping on playground equipment. It is an integral part of growing up. For this reason, Star Montessori has an unprecedented 4 playgrounds for children of all ages! Come take a tour of our facility so you can learn more about our summer and childcare programs!

Here are some exercises you can do with your child, without dragging them to the gym. Having kids doesn’t mean exercise becomes harder, it just means you need to be a little more creative. Now more than ever, it is important for parents to model healthy behaviors for their children. Childhood obesity rates are at an all-time high in the US and your kids are never too young to learn about the importance of living a lifestyle of movement.

  1. Yoga – Yoga is a fun way for kids to get up and moving, they are usually more flexible than adults and it feels more like playing than actually exercising. You can find a multitude of great videos or online classes to help you and your child learn proper form and flow!

  2. Bike Riding – find a trail nearby, pack some snacks, and you’re on your way for a day of fun! Whether your child is still too young and they sit in an attachment or they have their training wheels on or they still need to learn, it’s something you can do with children of all ages. Just make sure you have the right equipment and don’t forget your helmets.

  3. Kick Boxing – this one may seem a bit intense but why not try something new and out of your comfort zone. This intensive form of exercise is bound to get your heart rate up and perfect for your energy bunny little one. Have some fun with it, have your child punch the palms of your hands or have them swing into the air as you duck and dodge.. channeling my inner Karate Kid maybe?

  4. Body Weight Exercises – think jumping jacks, burpees, squats. Help your child burn off that excess energy and teach them how they can use their own bodies to get stronger.

  5. Dancing – turn up the tunes and have a dance party.. is it Friday yet? Whatever your style may be just get up and dance with your kids. Pull up a Zumba video or just find a great Spotify playlist and shake, jump, slide, and shimmy away.

  6. Park Day – get to the park, all the equipment is already there. Bonus points for packing some juice boxes. Play some tag with your kids, they’ll LOVE it and probably go to bed faster that night.

Life gets the best of us sometimes, but that doesn’t mean we should compromise our health and well-being. Your child will definitely get some time to be active here at Star but we always encourage a healthy lifestyle at home as well! Between YouTube videos, exercise DVD’s, and our local outdoor amenities, there are LOT’s of ways to live a healthy lifestyle. Making exercise fun and easy for your kids will instill a healthy focus for your entire family. Looking for something to do this weekend, get out and MOVE, or dance or kick box, whatever you fancy.
